Looking for
relatively affordable housing convenient to San Diego
State University (SDSU), downtown San Diego, the new
baseball stadium and Balboa Park? Consider
College Grove (aka the
College Area), population 57,000.
College Grove is a modest neighborhood with
small, practical homes. Many
College
Grove homes have front porches
and yards for children to play in. Restaurants in
College Grove are inexpensive, there are also tiny
coffee shops and used book stores. Single family
detached homes
in College Grove range in price from $340,000 –
$2,400,000;
while
College Grove condos
are priced from $220,000 – $490,000. Of the 35,000
housing units in College Grove, 21,000 are owner
occupied.
As with much of the rest of San Diego, College Grove
is undergoing redevelopment. Still, traffic and parking
remain significant issues, especially during the school
year. The majority of College Grove residents are
students at SDSU and young families. There is also an
Orthodox Jewish neighborhood near the Congregation Beth
Jacob Orthodox Temple on College Avenue, the area’s main
thoroughfare.
Just about everything in College Grove is within
walking distance. The new
College Grove mall, the Marketplace at the Grove,
has 50 stores including a Wal-Mart, and a Sam’s Club as
well as a multiplex theater and a bowling alley.
Residents of College Grove also enjoy antique
stores, a farmers market, a small casino, The Woman’s
Club and Chollas Lake Park with its eucalyptus-shaded
paths and small reservoir. There’s a path around the
water for running and jogging and children under 16 are
permitted to fish.
