Looking for a truly unique community
a little inland? Consider
Mount Helix, population 19,000.
Named for an indigenous snail, Mount Helix with its
magnificent 35-foot tall white cross proudly proclaims itself
the “Crown Jewel" of San Diego’s East County. Mount
Helix real estate appeals to artists, architects, musicians,
scientists and university professors.
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy jogging Mount Helix’s narrow
byways, which curl around the slopes of the mountain and
provide beautiful views. Many of them were laid out
for residents with horse and buggies. Car traffic
is generally sparse on these roads, but hikers and joggers
need to be careful as there are no shoulders.
A stone amphitheater at the top of
Mount Helix is popular with
theatergoers and for Easter sunrise services. The
amphitheater and white cross were dedicated Easter Sunday,
1925, and later deeded to the county. Today, a private
foundation owns the facility.
