Looking for funky charm (or charming funk)? You
can’t beat Ocean Beach (OB),
one of San Diego’s most popular neighborhoods. Stranded in time
somewhere back in the 1960s, OB’s streets are lined with Volkswagen
buses, not SUVs. Surfers, bikers and other free-spirited denizens
are proud of their motto: “Ocean
Beach - It’s Beside the Point” (Point
Loma).
Single family detached
homes in Ocean Beach
range in price from $535,000 for a two bedroom, one bathroom,
850 square foot home built in 1913 to $2,800,000 for a five
bedroom, five bathroom, 4,450 square foot home built in 1952.
Ocean Beach condos
range in price from $369,000 fro a two bedroom, two bathroom,
990 square foot home built in 1966 to $1,400,000 for a two bedroom,
three bathroom, 1500 square foot home built in 1976.
Ocean Beach attracts a variety of musicians, activists,
artists, and surfers, but increasingly, working professionals
are populating the area, as Ocean Beach housing is renovated
and home prices rise.

is split up among single family residences, single story beach
cottages, duplexes, and condo complexes.
For a variety of reasons, tourists don’t usually find their
way to Ocean Beach so residents
are able to keep it pretty much to themselves all year long.

beach.
Two favorite Ocean Beach landmarks are the OB Pier and
Dog Beach. The Ocean Beach Pier is the longest commercial
pier on the West Coast. Ocean Beach’s laid back downtown
is home to boutiques, antique shops and coffeehouses.
Each Wednesday, one block of downtown is dedicated to a Farmers
Market, bringing locally grown produce, cheeses, cakes, meats,
etc., live music, dancers and visitors. Yearly events include
the summer Chili Cook-off and Street Fair and the Christmas
Parade and tree-lighting.
