The first known residents were the Luiseño, who lived for centuries in a village they called Palamai, near what is today Aqua Hedionda Lagoon. In 1769, Don Gaspar de Portola and Fr. Juan Crespi blazed the trail now known as El Camino Real. During a rest stop, upwind from an old fishing camp, their weary troops christened the lagoon for posterity. They called it Aqua Hedionda (Stinking Water).

Modern-day Carlsbad was born in the 1880s when a former sea captain dug a well and began offering water at the train station. Tests revealed it was chemically similar to water from one of Europe’s most famous spas, Carlsbad, in what was then Czechoslovakia. The site of the original well is at Alt Karlsbad, a replica of a German Hanseatic house, on Carlsbad Boulevard.

Known as the golf capital of the world, featuring two world class golf resorts. More than 30 golf industry businesses call Carlsbad California home. Construction on a municipal golf course is scheduled to begin soon.

Carlsbad was named one of the top beaches by travel writer Ellen Kaufman (also known as the Travel Mom). On "Good Morning America" on July 27 2005, Ms. Kaufman touted Carlsbad as one of her favorite spots.

Ms Kaufman said, “Carlsbad has over five miles of family-friendly beaches that offer the perfect place to cool off. Surfing lessons are abundant, as are the loads of free activities - from jazz concerts in the parks on Friday nights to hiking on the Carlsbad trail system.."

A wide concrete walkway runs the length of Carlsbad State Beach. It is not at all uncommon to see roller-bladders, runners, joggers, and walkers by themselves or with fiends or a dog at all hours. The summer surf is tame on this life guarded ribbon of sand and pebbles, making it safe for families and swimmers.

Offshore surfers paddling out to where the waves break are a common sight. Swimmers and surfers are separated by zones to ensure safety for both.

You'll see plenty of kids making sand castles, beachcombers, fishermen and colorful Frisbees flying to a fro. Further inland on dryer sand you'll see volleyball games, horseshoes, picnicking, and sunbathing and others enjoying a barbeque under the shade of an umbrella or tarp. There are always plenty of activities in the sun and on the beach.

Local attractions include spas, nature trails, flower fields in bloom, 18-hole championship golf courses, an historic rancho, mineral springs, fresh and tidewater lagoons, water sports, antique shops, clothing stores, upscale boutiques, fine dining restaurants, Legoland, the Museum of Making Music, the Children’s Discovery Museum of North County, the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, and the Gemological Institute of America. Each February, the La Costa Resort and Spa hosts the World Golf Championships.

Some well known residents include the Pulitzer family, Tony Hawk, Shawn White and Gary Hardwick, the world’s fastest skateboarder. The FOX original series, Point Pleasant, is filmed in Carlsbad.
