Kensington

Chic yet peaceful, Kensington is one of San Diego’s oldest and most charming neighborhoods. Many of its “luxuriously modest homes of refinement” including a number of Spanish style homes have spectacular canyon views.

Single family detached homes in Kensington range in price from $375,000 to $2,200,000 while Kensington condos ranges in price from $280,000 to $600,000.

Kensington overlooks Mission Valley’s southern rim. A large number of Kensington homes, townhomes and condominiums enjoy views of the valley. The area includes five subdivisions developed in the early part of the 20th century. The distinctive California-Spanish style homes sit above steep slopes dedicated to open space.

Kensington streets tend to meander, and they’re lined with trees. Along Adams Avenue, Kensington’s miniature Main Street, residents enjoy coffee houses, an award winning restaurant, a pub, antique stores, a library and a vintage art cinema which offers independent films, as well as a small park with a playground.

A tightly knit community, there’s a community association which offers a reasonably priced dinner before its monthly program. Members meet at 7:00 PM on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Kensington Community Church. The planning committee also meets at the church every other Wednesday at 6:30 PM.

Kensington has a reputation as a haven for independent thinkers. In 1929, for example, the second leader of Jehovah’s Witnesses believed that Armageddon would happen soon and that various historical figures (including King David and Samson) would return to Earth. Accordingly, he built a 20-room mansion for them at 4440 Braeburn Road in Kensington.

Annual events like the Roots Festival and the Adams Avenue Street Fair attract people to Kensington from all over the county.
