El Cajon

Spanish for “the box,” El Cajon (population 97,000) is nestled amongst the rolling hills and mountains of San Diego’s East County. Property owners enjoy the warm, dry climate. Indeed, El Cajon’s soil and climate are perfect for growing citrus fruit, avocados, and grapes.

Single family detached El Cajon homes range in price from $176,000 for a three bedroom, two bathroom, 1056 square foot home built in 1990 to $2,200,000 for a four bedroom, four bathroom 4200 square foot home built in 1990.

El Cajon condos range from $221,000 for a two bedroom, one bathroom, 800 square foot home built in 1977 to $545,000 for a four bedroom, three bathroom, 1700 square foot home built in 1996. Missionaries pastured their cattle in The Box where the surrounding mountains kept them from wandering off. Gold miners traversed the valley en route to San Diego, camping at what is now the corner of Main Street and Magnolia. A hotel was built to accommodate them, and a small commercial district began to grow around it. Like much of the rest of San Diego’s East County, El Cajon grew rapidly in WWII as soldiers and sailors flocked west.

Today, El Cajon is a vibrant community with art galleries, museums (including the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Art Center), The East County Performing Arts Center, the El Cajon Speedway, Gillespie Field (the oldest and largest of San Diego County’s eight airports), photography studios, shopping, restaurants, and two community colleges. El Cajon hosts the ever popular Mother Goose Parade on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (one of the biggest parades in the nation) as well as the El Cajon Classic Cruise (the largest weekly car show in Southern California) and weekly Concerts on the Green. Like most of San Diego County, El Cajon is in the process of redevelopment and revitalization.
