Most of rural San Carlos real estate is comprised of ranch-style single family homes built in the 1960s and 70s. Some have been customized. At over 6,000 acres, Mission Trails Regional Park is the largest urban park in the US. Lake Murray, part of the park, offers picnicking, baseball and tennis, or you can rent boats fishing is permitted on certain days. A paved strip around the lake permits walking, bicycling and rollerblading.
On Cowles Mountain, also part of the park, you can hike a mile and a half to the summit, the highest point in the city of San Diego, and enjoy a breathtaking view of San Diego, Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. There are hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails on the mountain.
At the foot of the mountain, residents of San Carlos enjoy a well-established golf course that borders Lake Murray and affords views of Cowle’s Mountain from each fairway.
Residents of San Carlos have their choice of two malls and two movie complexes.
